MAA Article Prize in Critical Race Studies
The Medieval Academy of America Article Prize in Critical Race Studies will be awarded annually to an article in the field of medieval studies, published in a scholarly journal, that explores questions of race and the medieval world, and which is judged by the selection committee to be of outstanding quality.  Established in 2020, in the wake of Charlottesville, George Floyd, and the longstanding, foundational structures of race and racism that have informed the modern disciplines of medieval studies overall, the Article Prize in Critical Race Studies seeks to highlight contributions that effectively challenge and enable the field of medieval studies to examine the significance of race both in our areas of research and our processes and methods of scholarship.  Articles may be historical or historiographic in nature; scholars of all levels and affiliations are welcome to apply.

The eligibility of the article is determined by the publication year that appears in the journal or book where the article is published.  Articles shall be submitted in the year following their publication.  For example, articles bearing a publication date of 2019 will be submitted in 2020 for a prize to be given in 2021.

Articles, published in a scholarly journal, must be at least five pages in length.  A PDF of the article should be sent by email to the Executive Director at LFD@TheMedievalAcademy.org, together with a c.v.  Submissions must reach the Academy’s office no later than October 15.  Applicants must be members in good standing of the Medieval Academy. Dual-author submissions are acceptable, as long as both authors are MAA members. Submissions will be evaluated by the Inclusivity and Diversity Prize Committee, in consultation with the Inclusivity and Diversity Committee.  The prize will be announced at the annual meeting of the academy each spring.  The prize consists of a certificate and a monetary award of $500.

For questions about eligibility, please contact the Executive Director.
