Endowing a Dissertation Grant

Endowing a Dissertation Grant

To commemorate its seventy-fifth anniversary, the Medieval Academy in 2000 established a new program of dissertation grants named in honor of five members who over many years contributed to the development of the Academy: Hope Emily Allen, Helen Maud Cam, Grace Frank, Etienne Gilson, and E. K. Rand. Their careers as teachers and scholars reflect the organization's wide-ranging disciplinary interests, interests that will be developed and expanded by the next generation of scholars whose research will be supported by these grants. Since the program began, an additional two grants have been funded in honor of Frederick C. Lane and Charles T. Wood.

The Academy wishes to expand the program by providing additional dissertation grants named in honor of other retired or deceased medievalists. The Executive Director would be happy to work with members who would like to raise funds to endow a dissertation grant named after a former teacher, colleague, friend, or family member.

Although a sum of $40,000 contributed to the Academy's Endowment is necessary to endow fully a $2,000 annual grant, a fund to endow a grant may be established with a contribution of $10,000 from one or more individuals. At that point, the fund will be announced to the membership of the Medieval Academy, and the Executive Director will work with those wishing to endow the grant to identify likely contributors. Once the fund reaches $20,000 the dissertation grant will be named and will be awarded on a semi-annual basis. When the fund reaches $40,000, the named dissertation grant will be fully endowed and will be awarded annually.
