Harlaxton Symposium 2018: Performance, Ceremony and Display in Late Medieval Britain

Harlaxton Manor, Grantham, Lincolnshire, Tuesday 17th-Friday 20th July, 2018.

The theme of the 2018 Symposium is ‘Performance, Ceremony and Display in Late Medieval Britain’ and we will meet to to explore many dimensions of performance. As well as talks on musical and dramatic performance, it will include papers on aspects of display and associated ceremonies and rituals, on oral performance in a variety of ecclesiastical and social contexts, and on the performative potential of spaces, and of manuscripts and other physical objects. Speakers will include: Clive Burgess, Sarah Carpenter, Joyce Coleman, Lisa Colton, Sonja Drimmer, Elisabeth Dutton, Robert R. Edwards, Oliver Fearon, Helen Gittos, John Harper, David Harrap, Marlene Hennessy, Pamela King, Andrew Kirkman, Nicholas Orme, Matthew Payne, Ellie Pridgeon, Jaclyn Rajsic, Nigel Ramsay, Nicole Rice, Dean Rowland, Kate Rudy, Anne F. Sutton, Nicholas Watson, Philip Weller, Diana Wyatt. The excursion will be to St Mary’s church, Higham Ferrers, where delegates will also have the opportunity to visit the Bede House and Chantry Chapel, and to St Peter’s church at Raunds best known for its collection of medieval wall paintings.
