Medieval
Academy Travel Grants (2009)
The Medieval
Academy provides a limited number of travel grants to help independent
scholars or currently unaffiliated faculty present papers on topics
in medieval studies at professional meetings. Awards to support
travel in North America are $500; for travel outside North America
the awards are $750.
The Medieval
Academy awarded five travel grants in the May 2009 competition,
two for domestic travel and three for international travel
Rita George,
for "Questioning Salvation History: A Medieval Dominican (Temporarily)
Reconsiders Islam," delivered at the meeting of the Catholic
Theological Society of Amerca ($500)
Frank Godthardt,
for "Realizing a New Ecclesiology: Marsilius of Padua and Emperor
Ludwig the Bavarian," delivered at the Medieval Academy meeting
($750)
Maria Proctor-Tiffany,
for "Gothic Art in Motion in Fourteenth-Century France,"
delivered at the Medieval Academy meeting ($500)
Nichole Sterling,
for "Shifting Blame and the Subtle Management of Saga Narrative,"
delivered at the 14th International Saga Conference ($750)
Mary Stroll,
"Cadalus/Honorius II (10611073): Imperial Pope?"
delivered at the International Medieval Congress at Leeds ($750)
Application
deadlines:
(1) 1 November
2009 for meetings to be held between 1 March 2010 and 31 August
2010.
(2) 1 May 2010
for meetings to be held between 1 September 2010 and 28 February
2011.
Applications
should consist of four copies of the following: a one-page abstract
of the paper to be presented; a one-page c.v., including current
em-ployment status; a photocopy of the call for papers issued by
the meeting's organizers; and the names, phone numbers, and addresses
(including electronic) of two references. Please do not exceed the
page limits.
Although time
constraints may require an initial application before a paper has
been accepted, travel grants will not normally be awarded without
evi-dence that the paper will actually be given (such as a photocopy
of the relevant part of the program). Major national and international
meetings will be given priority. Grants will be limited to one per
applicant every three years. Applicants must hold the Ph.D. degree
and must be members of the Medieval Academy in good standing when
they apply to the program and when they hold the travel grant.
Submissions:
Send four copies of the application to Travel Grants, Medieval Academy,
104 Mt. Auburn St., 5th Floor, Cambridge, MA 02138.
