CARA Summer Programs and Tuition Scholarships

CARA members sponsor a number of summer programs in Latin, paleography, manuscript studies, etc. CARA awards full tuition scholarships to students participating in several of these programs; other programs are funded entirely by or jointly with the hosting institution. Details are provided below.

Catholic University of America, Center for Medieval and Byzantine Studies and Department of Greek and Latin. CARA will provide scholarships, supplemented by awards from Catholic University, that together will cover full tuition expenses for two graduate students who are members of the Medieval Academy and enroll in Latin Paleography (LATIN 534) in Summer 2013. For information about this course, its prerequisites, enrollment, etc., applicants are invited to visit http://mbs.cua.edu/ or http://greeklatin.cua.edu/. Students who wish to apply for these tuition scholarships should not contact the Medieval Academy of America or its Committee on Centers and Regional Associations (CARA). They should instead (1) send a resume/curriculum vitae and brief personal statement that outlines their research interests, background in Latin and medieval studies, and the importance of this summer course for their program, and (2) arrange to send separately a complete academic transcript and two letters of recommendation, to CARA/CUA Summer Scholarships, Center for Medieval and Byzantine Studies, The Catholic University of America,Washington, DC 20064, before the scholarship deadline of April 22.

University of New Mexico, Institute for Medieval Studies. CARA provides two scholarships to cover seminar tuition costs, available to graduate students who are members of the Academy. Those wishing to apply for the CARA scholarships should mention this in their application, with their letter of intent. A complete application packet will consist of (1) a letter of intent in which the applicant outlines his or her academic background, research interests, and need for training in manuscript studies; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) a letter of recommendation from one faculty member familiar with the applicant's work. Only students who are members of the Medieval Academy are eligible for these scholarships. Application materials should be sent to Institute for Medieval Studies, 2045 Mesa Vista Hall, MSC06 3620, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131 (Fax: 505-277-1183). This program is offered every other summer in even years. The bi-annual (even-years) deadline for receipt of CARA/University of New Mexico applications is April 5.

University of Notre Dame, Medieval Institute. CARA provides full tuition scholarships for two students taking Medieval Latin or Latin Paleography at the Medieval Institute. Only students who are members of the Medieval Academy are eligible for these scholarships. For general summer session information and course enrollment, students should go to the Summer Session Office web site (http://www.nd.edu/~sumsess). Students wishing to apply for these scholarships should not write the Medieval Academy. Instead, they should apply by sending a letter of intent, a resume, two letters of recommendation, and a transcript to CARA Summer Scholarships, Medieval Institute, 715 Hesburgh Library, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN 46556. The annual deadline for CARA/University of Notre Dame scholarship applications is 1 May.

Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto. CARA provides full tuition scholarships for two students taking summer courses in medieval Latin at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels. Only students who are members of the Medieval Academy are eligible for these scholarships. For details and application forms, write (with $2 mailing fee) to Medieval Latin Programme, Centre for Medieval Studies, 39 Queen's Park Cresc. E., Toronto, ON M5S 2C3, Canada (http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/medieval). Students wishing to apply for these scholarships should not write the Medieval Academy. Instead, they should send a transcript and a brief personal statement indicating their interest and the value of the summer program for their studies and should arrange for a letter of reference to be mailed separately to Medieval Latin Programme, at the above address. The annual deadline for CARA /University of Toronto scholarship applications is 1 March.
